WebApr 1, 2024 · I've fixed fret sprout on a rosewood board Strat and a finished maple Precision. Both were new guitars plagued by Fender's atrocious QC. They just don't dry wood anymore. I used a #4 flat metal file like the one you linked to level the sprout and bevel the frets. I finished with micro mesh pads. These are fantastic.
WebFor fret sprout I usually use a StewMac 6” flat fret leveling file to run along the side of the neck and knock them all flush to the wood/finish. Some people use tape, but in my experience you need to hit the finish/neck itself to get them truly flush. I use their micro mesh pads to buff out any file scratches afterwards, or wipe on some ... That will keep them in the tang cavity (fret sprout is generally defined as when a fret or two lift a bit from the fretboard). I have several guitars that have had their frets glued, and they don't sprout. They also sound better (this is a cork-sniffy reason to do it ).

If you get out a little file in January (or the driest time of the year in your area) and file the sharp fret ends away you'll never have fret sprout again.
